QLS are recruiting for a Pharmaceutical Materials Scientist to join a global Biopharmaceutical company on a contract basis for one year initially.

The Role:

This position is for a lab-based Pharmaceutical Materials Scientist to be a member ofa team responsible for the physicochemical characterization of pharmaceutical materials including small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), chemical intermediates, peptides, novel excipients, drug-product intermediates, drug products.The candidate will also be a key contributor to extraneous matter investigations in drug-substance and drug-product related clinical trial materials within Merck Research Laboratories (MRL). The candidate is expected to build strong technical expertise in solid-state characterization and foreign matters testing & identification.

Main Responsibilities Include:

• Executing requested physicochemical characterization protocols, performing foreign matter investigations, and recording experimental data in lab notebooks in accordance with ALCOA principles.

• Laboratory activities will mainly include (i) the characterizations of pharmaceutical materials to tackle pipeline development challenges related to crystallization, polymorph & salt-selection, milling, drug-excipient compatibility, enhancing bio-performance, and physical stability of small molecules, and (ii) the identification of extraneous matters through specific physicochemical testing procedures.

• In all cases, the candidate will contribute to preparing communications summaries and investigation reports in accordance with the Company’s good documentation practices.

• Additionally, the selected candidate will be expected to contribute to a culture of lab continuous improvement by enhancing operational efficiency and supporting lab compliance and safety.

• The role requires the ability to execute work in a timely fashion and in compliance with Safety and Environmental requirements.

• Strong communication,organizational and logistical skills, as well as good documentation practices are essential.

Your Qualification:

• Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences or related discipline or Bachelor’s degree in related discipline, with a minimum of two (2) years relevant industrial experience

• Strong analytical, laboratory skills including ability to work with very small sample sizes.

• Experience in solid materials characterization including techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Raman, particle size distribution (PSD) and optical microscopy.

• Strong written and verbal communications in English.

• Strong organizational and communication skills required to perform lab activities and draft scientific reports.

• Self-motivated, creative, and energetic scientist willing to continually learn and solve complex problems.

• Team-oriented and curious

• Experience in solid form/ polymorph/ salt/ co-crystal screening activities on API, synthetic intermediates and/or starting materials is preferred

• Experience in forensic analysis in solid and liquid dosage forms is preferred

• Good oral and written communication skills in German is preferred
